The Impact of One-On-One Instruction on Reading Growth

There is a specific kind of heartbreak that happens at the kitchen table. It’s the moment when a spelling list becomes a battlefield, and the eraser marks on the page are outnumbered only by the tears falling on the paper.

At Harbour Tutoring, we’ve seen this scene play out in countless homes. Perhaps you’ve lived it: the deep frustration of a child who can’t seem to make the letters "stick," the secondary-guessing of a parent wondering if they’re doing enough, and the mounting anxiety that accompanies every reading assignment.
Recently, a mother left us a Google Review that perfectly captured this struggle. She spoke about her child who used to cry over spelling. The frustration had become a wall between the student and their potential. But today, that same child is described as a "capable student". What changed? It wasn't magic, and it wasn't just "trying harder." The bridge from frustration to flourishing was built through the profound impact of one-on-one instruction. When we strip away the distractions of a crowded classroom and focus entirely on the individual, we see a three-fold shift in the student’s life: a restoration of belief, the guidance of mentorship, and a total academic transformation.
Phase One: Restoring Belief (The End of the Tears)
When a student cries over spelling or reading, they aren’t just crying about a forgotten "silent e." They are crying because they feel like they are failing at the most fundamental tool of human connection: language. In a classroom of twenty-five (or more!), a child who struggles to decode or encode words feels exposed. Every mistake is a tangible reminder of what they can't do.
The first and most vital task of a one-on-one reading tutor is to restore the student's belief in their own capacity to learn.
In a private 1:1 reading lesson, the "shame" of a spelling error disappears. We create a safe environment where a mistake is simply a data point, a clue that tells us which phonics rule we need to revisit. For the student mentioned in our review, the tears stopped when the pressure of "performing" was replaced by the peace of "practicing."
My favorite quote from a high school teacher of mine is “practice makes permanent”. She shifted the mindset of practicing to achieve perfection. But rather that there is beauty and purpose in practicing to build strength, and in turn, confidence.
We tell our students: "You aren't a 'bad' speller. Your brain just processes these patterns differently, and we haven't found your specific key yet. But we will." When a child realizes their tutor is 100% in their corner, the fight-or-flight response in their brain shuts off, and the learning centers open up. Belief is the prerequisite for literacy.
Phase Two: Mentorship
Reading, writing, and spelling are technical skills. They require a mastery of phonemic awareness, morphology, and syntax. But you cannot tutor a student in these mechanics if you are following a "one-size-fits-all" curriculum at a predetermined pace.
Mentorship in the Harbour Tutoring sense means moving at the speed of the student.
In a one-on-one environment, an expert reading tutor can see the exact micro-second a student’s eyes glaze over. We can see that they understand the sound of the letters but struggle with the spatial awareness of writing them down. This level of granular attention allows us to:
Pivot instantly: If a reading passage isn't clicking, we change the approach right then and there.
Target the "Why": We don't just ask students to memorize; we help them understand the “why” behind the English language. Why is there a 'ck' at the end of the truck but just a 'k' at the end of pink? When a student understands the why, they stop guessing and start knowing.
Build Executive Function: Writing is more than just spelling; it’s the organization of thought. A tutor guides the student to help them "map out" their ideas before the pencil even touches the paper.
This mentorship is why we are so protective of the one-on-one experience. Because we know how vital this consistency is to a student’s progress, we focus our most flexible resources here. In fact, at Harbour Tutoring, we’ve made it a policy that free rescheduling is available only for our 1:1 private lessons, because we know that life happens. But we also know that the momentum of that specific tutor-student bond is what creates the breakthrough.
Phase Three: The Transformation into a "Capable Student"
The ultimate goal of our work as Reading Tutor Service isn't just a correctly spelled word; it is the transformation of the student’s identity.
The student who once cried over a spelling list eventually becomes the student who can sit down, look at a complex word, and break it down with confidence. They go from being "the kid who struggles" to being "the capable student."
This transformation is holistic. When you unlock reading, you unlock every other subject. Science becomes accessible. History becomes a story rather than a chore. Writing becomes a way to share their voice rather than a source of anxiety.
The student mentioned in this Google Review didn't just learn to spell. They learned how to be a student. They learned that they can face a challenge, apply a strategy, and succeed. That is the "flourishing" we strive for. They no longer see themselves as "behind". They see themselves as someone who has the tools to bridge any gap.
From Frustration to Flourishing
If your child is currently in the "frustration" phase, if there are tears over reading or a complete avoidance of writing, please know that there is a way forward. The classroom is a wonderful place, but it isn't always the best place for a child to find their foundational footing in literacy.
One-on-one reading tutoring provides the quiet, the focus, and the tailored learning experience required to turn those tears into triumphs. We aren't just teaching spelling, reading and writing; we are rebuilding the belief that every child is capable of becoming a life-long learner.
